Momentum

November 2013

WELCOME from Alan

I have never blogged before. But I'm trying my hand at it now in my new blog called Threads. I'll be using "Threads" to share reflections on my experiences as national director, to reach you with important news about the BIC U.S. family, and to charm you with sporadic giveaways. I hope you'll join me there!

My most recent post, if you haven't seen it yet, introduces a conversation that is emerging about the BIC U.S. budget. You'll read more about that in this issue of Momentum, and you can also read my post on it now »

PLANNING AHEAD

2013 End-of-Year Reports

BIC churches in the U.S. are required to complete End-of-Year Reports for their Regional Conference and the General Church. These Reports will be sent out to churches by their Regional Conference in early December. The deadline for submitting them is January 31, 2014.

Thank you for your cooperation!

Update on General Conference 2014

Planning continues for General Conference 2014, which will take place at Lancaster (Pa.) Mennonite School on July 11–14, 2014, under the theme "Jesus is . . .". Online registration will open on December 2. Visit the GC 2014 page for the most current information, including hotels that are offering discounts to GC 2014 attendees (noted in the "Trip Planner").

MEMO

General Conference Board identifies changes in direction for BIC U.S. structure and budget, seeks approval from GC 2012 delegates

Earlier this week, General Conference Board sent an email to those who served as delegates to General Conference 2012 (GC 2012) in Ontario, Calif., in order to outline changes in direction that the body recommends and to initiate a vote on the issues by electronic ballot. Read more »

If you served as a GC 2012 delegate but have not yet received an email, please contact Kristine Frey, acting director of communications, at biccomm@bic-church.org.

Also, please be in prayer for the BIC U.S. Church family, as we, together, discuss important and complex issues. Ask the Lord to continue to move in hearts and guide in wisdom, for Jesus' glory and kingdom.

BIC World Hunger Fund releases funds for cyclone relief in India

Over 1,300 BIC families have been affected by Cyclone Phailin, which hit India in mid-October, causing damage to 653 houses and 68 BIC churches. The BIC World Hunger Fund disbursed $15,000 to aid BIC recovery efforts in Odisha. Brethren in Christ in the U.S. are invited to respond by contributing to the BIC World Hunger Fund. Donations given to World Hunger Fund help to replenish funds that were distributed at the time of a crisis. Read more »

Reminder about General Church address and gifts to CM

Beginning in 2014, the USPS address forwarding service for the BIC U.S. Offices will expire. This means that any correspondence sent to the Office's former address will be returned to the sender. To avoid disruption, please note that the current address for the BIC U.S. Offices is:

431 Grantham Road
Mechanicsburg, PA 17055

Additionally, all congregational gifts to Cooperative Ministries need to be accompanied by a CM Transmittal Form, and checks should be made payable to "General Conference of the Brethren in Christ, Inc."

Notes on closing of BIC Health Plan

The BIC Health Plan for BIC U.S. will come to a close on December 31, 2013. This impacts all coverage (health, vision, and dental) provided through the plan. More on the decision to discontinue the BIC Health Plan »

Accordingly, plan participants are asked to schedule any planned medical visits as soon as possible. Participants are also encouraged to ask their providers to submit payment requests promptly, so that transactions can be completed by the December 31 closing date.

Any questions about the BIC Health Plan or its discontinuance can be directed to Pam Arnold at parnold@bic-church.org.

RESOURCES

2014 Week of Prayer and Fasting

Each year, Brethren in Christ across the U.S. are encouraged to embark on a new year by spending time with God and the community of faith in prayer. The week of January 5–12 is a wonderful time to foster an attitude of fervent prayer and an awareness of our call to be witnesses locally, regionally, nationally, and globally.

Visit the 2014 Week of Prayer and Fasting page for resources, including prayer guides, information on planning prayer events, and a list of prayer requests from regional, national, and global contexts.

Registration is now open for Equipping for Ministry offerings

Check out the courses being offered during the spring 2014 term of the Directed Study Program, as well as the Core Courses scheduled for 2014.

Keeping up with the STEP team

This fall, the four young people participating in BIC World Mission's STEP internship gathered for six weeks of orientation and team building. The team will deploy for Honduras in December.

You can follow the adventures of these STEPpers on Facebook or the team blog.
