Momentum

May 2014

Greetings

Thank you for partnering with us in the important work of the Church. We deeply appreciate every person who partners with us in prayer, encouragement, and support.

I am writing this brief introduction to let you know about some changes we are making in our e-newsletters. These changes are one way we are working to advance the mission of the Brethren in Christ Church in the U.S. We hope it will be helpful for all of us as, together, we work to make disciples of all nations.

For a number of years we have been using two different e-newsletters to communicate the work of the Church. One of these was called BICWM Update and focused on the global mission of the church. The other, called Momentum, focused on the regional and national work of the church in the U.S. However, as one Church with one mission, we feel the time is right to merge these separate e-newsletters into one comprehensive e-newsletter. Beginning with this issue of Momentum, the contents of these e-newsletters will be merged.

Thanks again for your support. Together we continue to serve the mission of God in this world.

UPDATES

General Conference is now FREE and in 3-D

I am excited to give you important information updates for General Conference. As you know, our plan is to gather at Lancaster Mennonite School in Lancaster, PA, from Friday, July 11 until Monday, July 14. The theme for this year’s conference will be: Jesus is . . .

Global Compassion Fund (formerly The World Hunger Fund)

The World Hunger Fund has been one of the ways the church in North America has provided practical compassion and aid to churches and individuals around the world. It was started a number of decades ago as a response to the need for food. However, in recent years the compassionate aid has included food, flood recovery, clothing, blankets, and school supplies. Since 2008, over $850,000 has been distributed through this fund. Read more »

STEP Team Opportunity

Last month’s Momentum highlighted the STEP program, the BICWM internship program for young adults. We are happy to report that the 2013-2014 STEP team arrived home safely May 11 from their six months in Honduras. We rejoice in the rich experiences they had in Honduras and ask God’s blessing and direction as they reenter U.S. culture and make decisions for their future. We are still recruiting for the 2014-2015 STEP team and any interested persons should contact Vicky Landis.

PLANNING AHEAD

BIC Leadership Orientation

This year’s BIC Leadership Orientation (formerly New Pastors and Spouses Orientation) will be held on September 9-10 at Grantham BIC Church in Mechanicsburg, Pa. This is a great way for pastors and spouses to become more familiar with our church family leaders, structures, and processes. The bishop in each Regional Conference will be in touch with the pastors and spouses who will be invited to this year’s event.

YouthQuest 2014

Join hundreds of Brethren in Christ students from across North America for four days of incredible music, teaching, and a ridiculous amount of fun! YouthQuest 2014 is happening December 27-30, 2014 in Washington D.C. Check out our website for a growing list of speakers, artists, along with registration and promotional information for your church.

RESOURCES

C.R.A.C.K.E.D. Wide Open: The BIC Approach to Scripture

This is a one-day seminar still coming to sites in Virginia, Ohio and Pennsylvania. The Brethren in Christ have always been “people of the book,” maintaining a high respect for the Bible as the Word of God. At the same time, modern influences, such as postmodernism’s relativism and Evangelicalism’s inerrancy, have torn our practice of interpretation in vastly different directions. This seminar will take our current context into account in order to explore how the Living Word speaks to us today. Learn more »
