Revisiting the idea of a brotherhood health plan

Less than a year after discontinuation of the Brotherhood Health Plan, Leadership Council has agreed to take another look at the idea of group insurance for BIC pastors. It is too early to predict whether we can breathe new life into the concept of a group plan or plans. In fact, the study process will likely continue for more than a year. But for now, the question is back on the table.

The decision to reopen the issue of health insurance for pastors was fueled by conversation at this past summer’s General Conference. It is generally recognized that there are no easy and/or inexpensive answers to the questions, but there is widespread agreement that responsibility for securing coverage should not be handed off to individual pastors. And there is considerable discomfort with leaving it up to each congregation to seek out and secure coverage for church staff. Therefore, the yet-to-be-named study team will focus on the pros and cons of group plans organized by regional conferences or across the whole of U.S. congregations—along with the unavoidable connection between reasonable rates and mandatory participation.
