Help in living with dual citizenship

The current issues of the denomination’s print publications, Shalom! and In Part, both address the challenge that followers of Christ face as citizens of two kingdoms, one of this earth and the other of God. Former General Secretary Darrell Winger, writing in In Part, reminds us that “individual Christians, congregations, and denominations must struggle to find the ‘right’ connection between the two, and the Brethren in Christ are no exception.”

The fall edition of In Part focuses on the question of political engagement, including articles highlighting the ways that BIC individuals are involved in their communities, a caution from theologian Ron Sider that “politics is dangerous,” and Bishop Perry Engle’s prayer that “God bless America, and everyone else for that matter.” If you haven’t received your copy of the magazine in the mail, it’s available online at bic-church.org, where you’ll find additional material on the topic.

This quarter’s topic for Shalom! A Journal for the Practice of Reconciliation is “The Church’s Role in Peace and Justice Ministries” and includes articles about Circle of Hope’s Shalom House in Philadelphia, Pa, the Canadian Conference Student Ministries Team’s new venture called “theAwakening,” the Harrisburg (Pa.) church’s outreach to prisoners, along with several ideas and resources for engaging your congregation in peace and justice advocacy and ministry. The full text of the fall Shalom! is available online, along with information about subscribing to the publication.
