Leadership transition announced for the Canadian Conference

GRANTHAM, Pa. (Aug. 11, 2009)—In a communiqué to pastors and other congregational leaders, the Leadership Team of the Canadian Conference of the Brethren in Christ Church in North America announced that Brian Bell would conclude his service as bishop of the conference on August 4.  He has served as a bishop within the BIC Church since July 2004.

“We are grateful for the many and significant contributions that Brian has made to the
conference, including encouraging and equipping pastoral leaders. He has modeled integrity and honesty in his professional and personal dealings. And he has worked diligently to resource congregations for health, not just in Canada, but church-wide as the denomination’s point-person for healthy congregations,” Tennyson Sider, chairman of the Canadian Conference Leadership Team, says.

Darrell Winger, who served as bishop of the Canadian Conference from 1997 to 2004 and then as General Secretary of the denomination from 2004 to 2006, has been asked to step in as bishop during the transition period. Winger is pursuing a doctoral degree at the Toronto (ON) School of Theology while also filling part-time roles with The Meeting House BIC Church (Oakville, ON) and as executive director of the International Brethren in Christ Association (IBICA).
