BIC World Hunger Fund provides opportunity to help flood victims in India
UPDATE: GRANTHAM, Pa. (Sept. 8, 2008)—The BBC reports that the rescue of the hundreds of thousands of flood victims in the Indian state of Bihar is at a "crucial" stage. View the BBC's latest update on the situation.
GRANTHAM, Pa. (Sept. 2, 2008)—Last week, monsoon rains returned again to South Asia, causing devastating floods across India, Bangladesh, and Nepal. Flooding was most serious this year in the Indian state of Bihar. According to the BBC, monsoon rains overwhelmed a dam on the river Kosi, causing the river to change course and severely affect areas in Bihar not normally prone to floods. As a result, thousands of people —some say about half a million—across the state have been left stranded on rooftops and on high ground without food, protection, or sanitary water for over a week. More than 100 villages are completely submerged or have simply been swept away. Though some relief efforts have been mobilized, many on the ground in India are critiquing the delayed and insufficient response to the terrible flooding.
An estimated 500,000 people have been evacuated in Bihar and the official death toll remains at about 75; however, tens of thousands remain under unsanitary conditions in relief camps and the death toll is expected to rise significantly as relief efforts continue in the most remote areas of the state. And with the occupants of the undersupplied relief camps expected to double over the coming days, the fear of cholera and other waterborne diseases mounts.
Last year, the Brethren in Christ World Hunger Fund distributed about $65,725 to aid flood relief efforts in India and Nepal. This year, as the people of India struggle under these terrible conditions, please consider giving again to the BIC World Hunger Fund.
