BIC World Hunger Fund sends food money for flood and drought victims in Mozambique
GRANTHAM, Pa. (Nov. 10, 2008)—Mozambique is identified as one of the poorest countries in the world, with almost half of its children living below the poverty line* and one of the lowest Human Development Index (HDI) rankings in the world**. Severe droughts and flooding, recurring natural disasters in the country, continue to inhibit development among those living in rural areas. And it was the unpredictable climate that hit farmers in Mozambique hard again early on this year. The extreme weather came during the country’s main growing season, and the damage it caused has left many people struggling for food.
Late last month, Jake Shenk, regional administrator in Southern Africa for Brethren in Christ World Missions, reported that conditions were growing increasingly serious. He then submitted a request for funds on behalf of the Mozambique church leadership from the BIC World Hunger Fund to help alleviate the situation.
In response to Jake’s request, $12,000 (USD) is being sent to Mozambique from the BIC World Hunger Fund to purchase food for those in need. Local leaders estimate that this gift will provide 350 families (about 2,000 people) with 25 kg of maize or an equivalent amount of rice and 5 kg of beans each month for the next four months. Under the direction of provincial pastors, pastors of individual BIC churches will purchase and distribute the food to the most needy families.
Jake notes that food will be shared with BIC church members and non-members alike, ensuring that “the needs of the community will be met, and the church will have an impact.”
In the midst of these hardships are over 2,000 attendees comprising 37 congregations affiliated with the BIC Church in Mozambique. Many of these congregations are the result of the work of church planters sent from BIC churches in Malawi.
As BIC congregations across North America consider compassion projects to invest in during the holiday season, denominational leaders encourage pastors to consider families in Mozambique in this time of dire need. Through the World Hunger Fund, a gift of only $12 will provide one family with food for the month, and a gift of $36 will provide one family with food for the next four months.
