UPDATE: More violence against Christians erupts in Orissa

GRANTHAM, Pa. (June 23, 2009)—Three Brethren in Christ churches and 50 homes were destroyed in Orissa, India, according to a report from B.R., Brethren in Christ World Missions regional administrator for South Asia.

In mid-June, Hindu fundamentalists displaced more than 200 people in five villages in the Koraput district of Orissa, according to the report.

“The militant people have destroyed the houses and belongings of the village people and have driven them out from the villages,” says B.R.

“The people are really suffering because they have neither food nor any shelter. We need your prayers. This has become a serious issue in Orissa.”

UPDATE: BICWM has launched a special project to help with the relief efforts in Orissa. The project will supply 20 church planters and their families (all of whom were displaced by the violence) with necessary household items (bed, clothes, mats, mattresses, blankets, cooking utensils, etc.); additionally, funds will be used to repair church buildings that were razed during the attack.
